Crossflow plate heat exchanger with bypass and damper

This plate heat exchanger combines the crossflow insert block with an integrated bypass. A louvre damper in front of the block decides whether the air flows through the plate pack or past it.

Design

The bypass channel sits below the plate pack in the same block. The damper is mounted on the inflow side, and its vertical louvres move together via a linkage.

Operation

In normal operation the air flows through the plate pack and the heat is recovered. In summer or for defrosting the damper opens the bypass. Intermediate positions control the heat recovery output.

Technology

Type AEC-200
Flow arrangement crossflow with bypass
Damper aluminium louvre damper
Drive square shaft for rotary actuator
Leakage low, depending on design
Material Block as insert block, damper in aluminium, for corrosive air in stainless steel or plastic

Example illustration

Strengths

  • Bypass for summer operation and defrosting
  • Prepared for rotary or linear actuators

Limits

  • Dampers and actuator need regular maintenance
  • Takes more space than the plain installation block

Frequently asked questions

What is the bypass for?

When no heat is to be recovered, for example in summer, the air flows past the plate pack. In frost, a short bypass operation defrosts iced channels.

Which actuator fits?

The damper is prepared for a directly mounted rotary actuator. Linear actuators act via a control lever.
